IBIS in Peru
In Peru, IBIS has proposed to support the organisational development of the indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon and highland region, promoting the recognition of their demands for Collective Rights. In this way, we seek to improve their opportunities for development and participation in Peruvian society and to contribute to their social, cultural, economic and political democratization.
The specific program objectives are:
To strengthen indigenous organizations at a national, regional, and local level so as to be legitimate and autonomous authorities for the defense of Collective Rights.
To develop the indigenous movement's capacity for political advocacy, together with other actors, for the transformation of the legal and institutional framework towards the recognition and implementation of Collective Rights.
To have the indigenous organizations participate proactively in the realms of local government and articulate their interests with those of other sectors, towards making progress in local and regional development policies.
The collective rights of the indigenous people contribute to the construction of a democracy founded not only in equality and citizenship, but also in diversity and ethnic plurality. At the same time, collective rights strengthen interculturality.
