Education in hard-to-reach areas

For IBIS, education is a human right and depriving any child access to quality education is denying them the opportunity to achieve a better life. In Ghana IBIS work within the thematic programme Education for Empowerment (EfE) to improve education delivery in Ghana.
The programme, which is sponsored by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and partly by a private Danish company, Toms Confectionery Factory, is working to increase both the access to and the quality of education. Access is improved by offering the necessary resources to partners to provide complementary education for out-of-school children in remote and ’hard-toreach’ areas in Ghana. The quality of education is enhanced through advocacy activities and by building the capacity of local stakeholders to supervise the effective delivery of primary education. Moreover EfE together with the District Assembly and the Ghana Education Service is supporting the training and professional development of untrained and volunteer teachers.
What does IBIS do through the EfE Programme?
- Supports relevant partners to provide quality primary education.
- Promotes complementary education for the ‘hard-to-reach’ and out-of-school children.
- Provides professional development of school teachers, and support untrained teachers to get a diploma in education.
- Offers training of School Supervisors on effective monitoring and supervision.
- Promotes the establishment of School Management Committees and Parent-Teacher Associations in programme districts.
- Supports civil society organisations to serve and advocate for Education for All.
- Creates awareness about HIV/AIDS in schools.
